Generative AI for Synthetic Medical Imaging What can we expect? Artificial intelligence (AI) models for medical imaging tasks, such as classification or segmentation, require large and diverse datasets of images. However, due to privacy and ethical issues, as well as data-sharing infrastructure barriers, these datasets are scarce and difficult to assemble. Synthetic  medical imaging data  generated by AI from existing data could address this challenge by augmenting and de-identifying real imaging data. In addition, synthetic data enables new applications, including modality translation, where a CT scan can be transformed into a corresponding MRI; contrast synthesis, where a contrast agent is synthetically added to the image; and professional training, where synthetic images of rare cases can improve a trainee’s clinical knowledge. However, synthetic data also poses technical challenges, such as ensuring the realism and diversity of the synthesized images, evaluating the perfor...

Unlocking the Potential of AI in Healthcare: Transforming Medical Imaging with AI

A Conversation with Segmed’s CEO By Chuck Egoville In this second installment of our series on how AI is impacting the healthcare industry, Chuck Egoville, Managing Partner at JM Search, sat down with Martin Willemink, CEO of Segmed, to explore how cutting-edge algorithms are transforming medical imaging, diagnostics, and personalized treatment plans. In the interview, we dive into Segmed’s innovative approach to medical imaging and its diverse use cases. Chuck: Welcome, Martin! Thank you for taking the time to sit down with us. Could you share a bit about yourself and your background? Martin: I grew up in the Netherlands, where I attended medical school and later earned a master’s degree in clinical epidemiology and a PhD in medical imaging. After completing two years of residency in the Netherlands, I felt that I wanted a more innovative experience, and I was fortunate to receive a grant for a fellowship at Stanford. Initially, I planned to return after one year to finish my radiolo...
